Egress Casement Window vs Egress Window: A Comprehensive Comparison for Homeowners

When it comes to home safety, egress windows play a crucial role in providing an emergency exit during unforeseen circumstances. As a homeowner, it is essential to understand the differences between egress casement windows and standard egress windows to make an informed decision. In this blog post, we will delve into the unique features, benefits, and drawbacks of each window type, helping you choose the best option for your home.

Understanding Egress Windows

Before diving into the comparisons, let's first define egress windows. These windows are designed to meet specific size and accessibility requirements, as mandated by the International Residential Code (IRC). They serve as an emergency exit in case of a fire or other life-threatening situations, allowing occupants to safely escape and providing access for emergency personnel.

Egress Window Requirements

According to the IRC, egress windows must meet the following requirements:

1. The window must have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet.

2. The minimum net clear height opening should be 24 inches.

3. The minimum net clear width opening should be 20 inches.

4. The window must be operable from the inside without the use of keys, tools, or special knowledge.

5. The window's bottom sill should be no more than 44 inches above the floor.

Egress Casement Windows: Features and Benefits

Egress casement windows are a popular choice for homeowners due to their unique design and functionality. These windows are hinged on one side and swing outward, providing unobstructed access to the outdoors. Here are some of the key features and benefits of egress casement windows:

1. Maximized Opening Space: Egress casement windows can be opened entirely, providing a larger escape area compared to other window types. This makes them an excellent option for meeting egress requirements, especially in smaller rooms.

2. Ease of Operation: Casement windows are easy to open and close, even for children and elderly individuals. The crank handle mechanism ensures smooth operation and can be locked in multiple positions for added security.

3. Energy Efficiency: Egress casement windows offer excellent energy efficiency due to their tight seal when closed. This helps in reducing drafts and maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature, ultimately lowering energy bills.

4. Versatility: These windows are available in various styles, sizes, and materials, making it easy to find an option that complements your home's architectural design.

Standard Egress Windows: Features and Benefits

Standard egress windows come in various styles, including single-hung, double-hung, and sliding windows. These windows have their unique features and benefits, which we will explore below:

1. Affordability: Standard egress windows are generally more affordable than egress casement windows. This makes them an attractive option for homeowners on a budget.

2. Low Maintenance: Single-hung and double-hung egress windows are easy to clean and maintain, as the sashes can be tilted inwards for hassle-free cleaning.

3. Space Efficiency: Sliding egress windows are an excellent choice for rooms with limited wall space, as they do not require any additional space to swing open.

4. Customization: Like egress casement windows, standard egress windows are available in a wide range of styles, sizes, and materials, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your home.

Drawbacks and Considerations

While both egress casement windows and standard egress windows offer unique benefits, they also have certain drawbacks that homeowners should consider:

1. Cost: Egress casement windows can be more expensive than standard egress windows, which may be a concern for budget-conscious homeowners.

2. Accessibility: Some individuals may find it challenging to operate casement windows due to their outward swing. This is particularly true for those with mobility issues or in tight spaces.

3. Cleaning: Egress casement windows may be more challenging to clean than single-hung or double-hung windows, as they do not tilt inwards.

4. Security: While both window types can be equipped with locks, casement windows may be perceived as less secure due to their outward swing.

Making the Right Choice for Your Home

When deciding between egress casement windows and standard egress windows, consider factors such as your budget, room size, and personal preferences. Both window types have their unique advantages and drawbacks, so it is essential to weigh your options carefully.

Remember that egress windows are crucial for your family's safety, so ensure that you choose a window that meets the IRC requirements and provides easy access during emergencies. Consulting with a professional window installer can also help you make the best decision for your home.

Casement Window

Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
