The Ultimate Guide to Fly Screens for Casement Windows

Casement windows are an elegant and practical choice for any home, providing excellent ventilation and unobstructed views. However, these windows can also be a magnet for pesky insects, especially during the warmer months. That's where fly screens come in! In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the benefits of fly screens for casement windows, the various types available, and how to choose the perfect one for your home.

Why You Need Fly Screens for Your Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged at the side and open outwards, making them a popular choice for homeowners who want to maximize ventilation and enjoy an unobstructed view. However, their design can also make them an easy entry point for insects and other unwanted guests. Fly screens are the perfect solution to keep bugs at bay while still enjoying the benefits of your casement windows. Here are some reasons why you need fly screens for your casement windows:

1. Keep insects out:Fly screens effectively keep mosquitoes, flies, and other insects out of your home, ensuring a comfortable and bug-free environment.

2. Improve air quality:By keeping insects out, fly screens also prevent the spread of germs and diseases that these pests can carry. This helps maintain a healthier indoor environment for you and your family.

3. Enhance privacy:Fly screens provide an added layer of privacy, as they can obscure the view into your home from the outside.

4. Reduce energy consumption:With fly screens installed, you can keep your casement windows open to let in fresh air, reducing the need for air conditioning and ultimately saving on energy costs.

Types of Fly Screens for Casement Windows

There are several types of fly screens available for casement windows, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Let's take a look at some of the most popular options:

1. Retractable fly screens:These screens are designed to retract into a cassette when not in use, making them an ideal choice for casement windows. They can be easily pulled out and secured in place when needed, and then retracted back when not required. Retractable fly screens are available in both manual and motorized versions.

2. Fixed fly screens:As the name suggests, fixed fly screens are permanently attached to the window frame. They're a cost-effective and low-maintenance option, but they may not be suitable for all casement windows, especially those that open outwards.

3. Magnetic fly screens:These screens feature a magnetic strip that attaches to the window frame, making them easy to install and remove. They're a great option for casement windows that open inwards, as they can be easily removed to allow access to the window handle.

4. Sliding fly screens:Sliding fly screens are designed to slide horizontally along a track, making them suitable for casement windows that open outwards. They're a more durable option than retractable screens but may require more maintenance.

Choosing the Right Fly Screen for Your Casement Windows

To find the perfect fly screen for your casement windows, consider the following factors:

1. Window type:The type of casement window you have will determine the type of fly screen that's most suitable. For example, retractable or sliding fly screens are ideal for windows that open outwards, while magnetic screens are better suited for windows that open inwards.

2. Material:Fly screens are available in different materials, including fiberglass, aluminum, and stainless steel. Fiberglass is the most common and affordable option, while aluminum and stainless steel offer better durability and resistance to corrosion.

3. Mesh size:The size of the mesh will determine the level of protection against insects. A smaller mesh size will keep out smaller insects but may also restrict airflow, while a larger mesh size will allow for better ventilation but may not be as effective at keeping out tiny bugs.

4. Budget:The cost of fly screens can vary greatly depending on the type, material, and installation method. Consider your budget when choosing a fly screen, and keep in mind that investing in a high-quality product may save you money in the long run by reducing maintenance and replacement costs.

5. Aesthetics:Fly screens should not only be functional but also complement the overall look of your home. Choose a design and color that matches your window frames and the surrounding décor.

Installing fly screens on your casement windows is a smart investment that will not only keep insects at bay but also improve your home's air quality, enhance privacy, and reduce energy consumption. With various types, materials, and designs available, you're sure to find the perfect fly screen solution for your casement windows. So, go ahead and enjoy the fresh air and unobstructed views that your casement windows offer, without any unwanted guests!

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
