A Brief History of Casement Windows

Casement windows have a long and fascinating history, dating back to medieval Europe. Originally, they were small, unglazed openings in the walls of homes, covered with wooden shutters or iron bars for security. As glass became more widely available in the 16th and 17th centuries, casement windows began to feature glass panes, with leaded or lattice designs becoming popular.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, casement windows evolved further, with the introduction of new materials like steel and the development of more sophisticated hardware. Today, casement windows are available in a wide range of materials and styles, making them a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary homes.

Advantages of Casement Windows

Casement windows offer several key advantages over other window styles, including:

Improved Ventilation

One of the main benefits of casement windows is their ability to provide excellent ventilation. Because they open outward on hinges, casement windows can catch and direct fresh air into your home, making them perfect for promoting good airflow and keeping your living spaces cool and comfortable.

Enhanced Security

Casement windows are also known for their superior security features. The locking mechanism on a casement window is typically embedded within the frame, making it very difficult to force open from the outside. Additionally, the fact that casement windows open outward means that they can't be easily pried open with a crowbar or other tools.

Energy Efficiency

Casement windows are designed to create a tight seal when closed, which helps to prevent drafts and improve the energy efficiency of your home. This can result in lower heating and cooling costs, as well as a more comfortable living environment.

Unobstructed Views

With their large, single-pane design, casement windows offer clear, unobstructed views of the outdoors. This can make your living spaces feel more open and connected to the natural environment, and can be particularly beneficial in rooms with picturesque views.

Casement Window Styles

There are several different styles of casement windows to choose from, including:

Traditional Casement Windows

Traditional casement windows feature a single pane of glass that opens outward on hinges mounted on one side. This classic design is perfect for period homes or those looking to create a timeless, elegant look.

French Casement Windows

French casement windows consist of two separate panes of glass that open outward from the center, with no central post or mullion. This creates a wide, unobstructed opening that's perfect for letting in fresh air and enjoying scenic views.

Push-Out Casement Windows

Push-out casement windows are operated by pushing the window sash outward, rather than using a crank or handle. This sleek, minimalist design is ideal for contemporary homes or those with limited interior space.

Maintaining Your Casement Windows

Proper maintenance is essential for ensuring the longevity and performance of your casement windows. Here are some key tips for keeping your casement windows in top condition:

1. Regularly clean the glass and frames with a mild soap and water solution to remove dirt and debris.

2. Inspect the weatherstripping and seals for signs of wear or damage, and replace as needed.

3. Lubricate the hinges and locking mechanisms with a silicone-based lubricant to ensure smooth operation.

4. Check for signs of damage or wear on the hardware, and tighten or replace components as needed.

5. If your casement windows are painted, periodically check for signs of peeling or chipping paint, and touch up as needed to protect the wood from moisture and decay.

Final Thoughts

Casement windows are a versatile and attractive option for any home, offering a range of benefits from improved ventilation to enhanced security. With a variety of styles available, you're sure to find the perfect casement window to suit your needs and complement your home's design. INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
