Replacing a Crank on Your Casement Window: A Comprehensive Guide

Casement windows are a popular choice for homeowners due to their stylish appearance and ease of use. However, like any other window, they may require maintenance from time to time. One common issue that may arise is the need to replace the crank on your casement window. In this blog post, we will provide a comprehensive guide on how to do just that, ensuring that your window is back in perfect working order in no time.

Understanding the Casement Window Crank

Before diving into the process of replacing the crank, it's essential to understand its purpose and how it functions. The crank is a vital component of a casement window, as it allows you to open and close the window with ease. It consists of a handle and a mechanism, which work together to move the window sash. Over time, the crank may become damaged or worn, resulting in difficulty operating the window or even preventing it from opening altogether.

Identifying the Issue

The first step in replacing a crank on a casement window is to identify the problem. This may involve closely inspecting the crank for any visible damage or signs of wear. Common issues include stripped gears, broken handles, and bent or damaged mechanisms. If you're unsure about the source of the problem, it may be best to consult a professional for guidance.

Gathering the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before you begin the replacement process, it's essential to gather all of the necessary tools and materials. You will need:

A new casement window crank (ensure that it is compatible with your specific window model)

A screwdriver (both flathead and Phillips may be required)

A utility knife

A small pry bar or putty knife

A pair of pliers

A drill (optional)

Safety goggles

Removing the Old Crank

Once you have your tools and materials ready, you can begin the process of removing the old crank. Start by opening the window as far as possible, ensuring that you have ample space to work. Next, use the utility knife to carefully remove any paint or caulk that may be sealing the crank cover. Once the cover is free, use the screwdriver to remove any screws holding it in place, and then gently pry it off with the pry bar or putty knife.

With the cover removed, you will have access to the crank mechanism. Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws securing the crank to the window frame. Once all screws are removed, carefully pull the crank away from the window, taking care not to damage the surrounding materials.

Installing the New Crank

Now that the old crank has been removed, you can begin installing the new one. Start by aligning the new crank mechanism with the mounting holes on the window frame. It's essential to ensure that the gears of the crank align with those of the window sash. Once everything is in place, use the screwdriver to secure the new crank to the frame with the provided screws.

With the crank mechanism installed, you can now attach the new handle. This typically involves sliding the handle onto the crank spindle and securing it with a set screw. Ensure that the handle is properly aligned and tightened before testing the window's operation.

Testing the Window

With the new crank installed, it's essential to test the window's operation to ensure that everything is functioning correctly. Gently open and close the window several times, checking for any signs of resistance or difficulty. If the window operates smoothly and without issue, you can proceed to reinstall the crank cover.

Reinstalling the Crank Cover

The final step in replacing a crank on a casement window is to reinstall the crank cover. Align the cover with the mounting holes on the window frame and secure it with the previously removed screws. If necessary, use a utility knife to trim any excess paint or caulk for a clean, finished appearance.

With the cover in place, your casement window should now be fully operational and looking as good as new. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues will help to ensure the longevity and performance of your casement windows. And remember, if you ever encounter a problem that you're unsure how to handle, don't hesitate to consult a professional for assistance.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance.
