Casement Window Cost vs Single Hung: A Comprehensive Comparison for Homeowners

As a homeowner, one of the most significant decisions you'll make involves choosing the perfect windows for your home. The right windows not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also contribute to its energy efficiency and overall comfort. Two popular window styles that often leave homeowners in a dilemma are casement windows and single hung windows. In this blog post, we will provide a detailed comparison between casement window cost vs single hung, their features, and benefits, to help you make an informed decision.

Understanding Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged at the side and swing outward, either to the left or right, allowing them to open fully. They are operated using a crank or lever and can be customized to suit various architectural styles. Casement windows are known for their excellent ventilation, unobstructed views, and high energy efficiency.

Pros of Casement Windows

1. Superior Ventilation: Since casement windows open fully, they allow maximum airflow into your home, making them an excellent choice for rooms that require proper ventilation.

2. Energy Efficiency: Casement windows create a tight seal when closed, preventing air leakage and drafts. This helps in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature and reducing energy bills.

3. Unobstructed Views: With no horizontal bars dividing the window, casement windows offer clear and unobstructed views of the outdoors.

4. Enhanced Security: Casement windows come with a multi-point locking system, making them more secure than single hung windows.

Cons of Casement Windows

1. Higher Cost: Casement windows are generally more expensive than single hung windows due to their complex mechanism and additional hardware.

2. Limited Size Options: Casement windows are not suitable for large openings, as their size is limited by the weight that the hinges can support.

3. Maintenance: Casement windows require regular maintenance to ensure smooth operation, including lubricating the hinges and cleaning the tracks.

Understanding Single Hung Windows

Single hung windows feature a fixed top sash and a movable bottom sash that slides vertically. They are a traditional window style commonly found in older homes and are known for their affordability and ease of maintenance.

Pros of Single Hung Windows

1. Affordability: Single hung windows are generally less expensive than casement windows, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners.

2. Ease of Maintenance: With fewer moving parts, single hung windows are easier to maintain and clean than casement windows.

3. Classic Aesthetic: Single hung windows offer a timeless and classic look that complements various architectural styles.

Cons of Single Hung Windows

1. Limited Ventilation: Since only the bottom sash is operable, single hung windows provide less ventilation compared to casement windows.

2. Energy Efficiency: Single hung windows are more prone to air leakage due to the gap between the sashes, making them less energy-efficient than casement windows.

3. Restricted Views: The horizontal bar dividing the sashes in single hung windows can obstruct the view to the outdoors.

Casement Window Cost vs Single Hung: A Detailed Comparison

When comparing casement window cost vs single hung, it is essential to consider factors such as initial cost, installation, energy efficiency, and maintenance.

Initial Cost

Single hung windows are generally more affordable than casement windows due to their simpler design and fewer components. However, the price difference may vary depending on the materials used, the quality of the hardware, and the manufacturer.

Installation

Both casement and single hung windows require professional installation. However, casement windows may take longer to install due to their complex mechanism and additional hardware, which could increase labor costs.

Energy Efficiency

Casement windows offer better energy efficiency than single hung windows due to their tight seal when closed. This can result in lower energy bills and a more comfortable living environment. Although single hung windows are less energy-efficient, they can be improved by adding weatherstripping and upgrading to energy-efficient glass.

Maintenance

Single hung windows are generally easier to maintain than casement windows due to their fewer moving parts. Casement windows require regular maintenance, including lubricating the hinges and cleaning the tracks, to ensure smooth operation.

Making the Right Choice for Your Home

When it comes to choosing between casement window cost vs single hung, it ultimately depends on your preferences, budget, and the specific requirements of your home. Casement windows may be the better choice for homeowners who prioritize energy efficiency, unobstructed views, and superior ventilation. On the other hand, single hung windows may be more suitable for those who prefer a classic aesthetic and lower initial cost.

In conclusion, understanding the differences between casement and single hung windows is crucial in making the right decision for your home. By weighing the pros and cons of each window style, you can select the perfect windows that not only meet your needs but also enhance the overall appeal and value of your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
