Casement windows are hinged windows that open outward, providing excellent ventilation and unobstructed views. They are a popular choice for both traditional and modern homes due to their versatility and functionality. Casement windows can be made from various materials, including wood, aluminum, or vinyl, and are available in different styles, such as single, double, or French casement windows.

To help you navigate the world of casement windows, we've put together this comprehensive guide that covers all the essential abbreviations and terminology you need to know.

Casement Window Abbreviations

CW - Casement Window

CW stands for "Casement Window," which is the most basic abbreviation you'll come across when discussing this type of window. This abbreviation is used to differentiate casement windows from other window types, such as double-hung windows (DH), sliding windows (SW), or bay windows (BW).

FCL - Fixed Casement Left

FCL stands for "Fixed Casement Left," which refers to a casement window with a fixed (non-operable) pane on the left side. These windows are often used in combination with operable casement windows to provide a larger, unobstructed view while still allowing for ventilation.

FCR - Fixed Casement Right

FCR stands for "Fixed Casement Right," which is similar to the FCL abbreviation but refers to a casement window with a fixed pane on the right side. These windows can be used independently or in combination with other window types to create a unique and functional window design.

FCW - Fixed Casement Window

FCW stands for "Fixed Casement Window," which refers to a casement window with a non-operable pane. These windows are typically used for aesthetic purposes or in areas where ventilation is not necessary, such as above a door or in a stairwell.

LHC - Left Hand Casement

LHC stands for "Left Hand Casement," which refers to a casement window with the hinge on the left side. This means that the window opens from the right side, swinging outward to the left. The abbreviation LHC is used to specify the hinge location when ordering or discussing casement windows.

RHC - Right Hand Casement

RHC stands for "Right Hand Casement," which is the opposite of LHC. In this case, the casement window has the hinge on the right side, opening from the left side and swinging outward to the right.

OX - Operator on the Left, Fixed Pane on the Right

OX is an abbreviation used to describe the configuration of a casement window with an operable pane on the left side and a fixed pane on the right side. The "O" stands for "operator" (the part of the window that opens), and the "X" represents the fixed pane.

XO - Operator on the Right, Fixed Pane on the Left

XO is the opposite of OX, with the operator (opening pane) on the right side and the fixed pane on the left side. This abbreviation is used to specify the desired configuration when ordering or discussing casement windows.

Additional Casement Window Terminology

Apart from the abbreviations, there are some other terms you might come across when dealing with casement windows:

Mullion: A vertical or horizontal structural element that divides the window into smaller sections, such as in the case of French casement windows.

Sash: The part of the window that holds the glass pane, including the frame and the muntins (if present).

Weatherstripping: The material used around the window sash to seal gaps and prevent drafts, improving the window's energy efficiency.

With this comprehensive guide to casement window abbreviations and terminology, you'll be well-equipped to make informed decisions when choosing or discussing windows for your home or office. Whether you're a homeowner, architect, or contractor, understanding these abbreviations and terms will help you communicate effectively and ensure that your window project is a success.

Freedom to dream "truly custom-made"

Doorwin provides one-stop solution for professional windows doors manufacturer and installation. We have been serving customers with our high quality and branded products in United States, Asia and worldwide.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
