The History of Casement Windows and Stays

Casement windows have been around for centuries, dating back to medieval times when they were commonly found in European castles and homes. They were initially made of wood and glass, with metal fittings such as hinges and stays to hold them in place. The antique casement window stays that we are familiar with today were first introduced in the 17th century and have since become a staple in traditional and period-style homes.

The Allure of Antique Casement Window Stays

There's something undeniably appealing about the look and feel of antique casement window stays. These window fittings add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any home, making them a popular choice for those looking to incorporate a sense of history and character into their living spaces. Here are some of the reasons why antique casement window stays continue to captivate homeowners and designers alike:

Timeless Design

Antique casement window stays boast a timeless design that complements a wide range of architectural styles. They are often found in period homes, such as Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian properties, where they blend seamlessly with the traditional features and details of these buildings. However, they can also be incorporated into more modern homes, adding a touch of vintage charm to contemporary spaces.

Quality Craftsmanship

The craftsmanship that goes into creating antique casement window stays is truly remarkable. These fittings are often made from high-quality materials such as brass, iron, and bronze, ensuring that they are both durable and visually appealing. The intricate designs and patterns found on antique casement window stays are a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who created them.

Functionality

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, antique casement window stays are also highly functional. They serve as a practical and secure means of keeping casement windows open, allowing for ventilation and fresh air to enter the home. The adjustable nature of these stays means that the window can be held open at various angles, providing greater control over the amount of air and light that enters a room.

Types of Antique Casement Window Stays

There are several types of antique casement window stays to choose from, each with its own unique features and characteristics. Some of the most popular styles include:

Teardrop Stays

Teardrop stays are a classic choice for antique casement windows. As the name suggests, they feature a teardrop-shaped design at the end of the stay, which adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the window. These stays are often made from brass or iron and can be found in a variety of finishes, such as polished, aged, or antique.

Monkey Tail Stays

Monkey tail stays are another popular option for antique casement windows. These stays are characterized by their curled, tail-like design at the end of the stay, which adds a whimsical touch to the window. Like teardrop stays, monkey tail stays are typically made from brass or iron and can be found in various finishes to suit the style of your home.

Shepherd's Crook Stays

Shepherd's crook stays are a charming choice for antique casement windows, featuring a curved, crook-like design at the end of the stay. These stays are reminiscent of the staffs used by shepherds, adding a touch of rustic charm to the window. Shepherd's crook stays are often made from iron and can be found in a range of finishes, including black, pewter, and bronze.

Caring for Antique Casement Window Stays

To ensure that your antique casement window stays remain in good condition and continue to function effectively, it's important to take care of them properly. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help to prolong the life of your window stays and keep them looking their best. Some tips for caring for antique casement window stays include:

Regularly dust and clean the stays using a soft cloth or duster.

Apply a suitable metal polish or wax to the stays to keep them looking shiny and new.

Check the screws and fittings regularly to ensure that they are secure and in good working order.

In summary, antique casement window stays are a timeless and elegant addition to any home. Their history, design, and functionality make them a popular choice for homeowners and designers looking to incorporate a sense of character and charm into their living spaces. INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
