Tilt and Turn Casement Windows: The Ultimate Guide to Modern Functionality and Style

Introduction

Tilt and turn casement windows have been growing in popularity in recent years, and for good reason. These innovative windows offer a unique combination of functionality, style, and energy efficiency that make them an excellent choice for homeowners looking to upgrade their homes. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the features, benefits, and installation process of tilt and turn casement windows, so you can decide if they're the right choice for your home.

What are Tilt and Turn Casement Windows?

Tilt and turn casement windows are a type of window that can be opened in two different ways: by tilting the window inwards from the top or by swinging the window open like a traditional casement window. This dual functionality offers several advantages over traditional windows, including improved ventilation, easier cleaning, and enhanced security.

Key Features of Tilt and Turn Casement Windows

1. Dual Functionality

The most notable feature of tilt and turn casement windows is their dual functionality. The tilt function allows you to open the window at the top, creating a small gap for ventilation while still maintaining security. The turn function allows you to swing the window open like a traditional casement window, providing full ventilation and easy access for cleaning.

2. Enhanced Security

Tilt and turn casement windows feature multi-point locking systems, which provide increased security compared to traditional windows. When the window is in the tilt position, it is still secure and cannot be opened from the outside, making it an excellent option for ground-level windows or those in high-traffic areas.

3. Easy Cleaning

One of the biggest advantages of tilt and turn casement windows is their ease of cleaning. Since the window can be swung open, you can easily clean both the interior and exterior surfaces without needing to go outside or use a ladder.

4. Energy Efficiency

Tilt and turn casement windows are known for their energy efficiency. They feature a tight seal when closed, which helps to minimize drafts and heat loss. Additionally, the tilt function allows for controlled ventilation, which can help to reduce energy costs by preventing the need for constant air conditioning or heating.

5. Versatile Design

Tilt and turn casement windows are available in a wide variety of styles, materials, and finishes, making them suitable for any home design. Whether you prefer a traditional wood finish or a sleek, modern aluminum frame, there's a tilt and turn casement window to suit your taste.

The Installation Process

Installing tilt and turn casement windows is a relatively straightforward process, but it's important to ensure that the installation is done correctly to maximize the benefits of these windows. Here are the basic steps involved in the installation process:

1. Measuring and Ordering: Before ordering your tilt and turn casement windows, you'll need to take accurate measurements of your existing window openings. Be sure to measure the width, height, and depth of each opening, as well as any additional features such as trim or molding.

2. Preparing the Opening: Once your new windows have arrived, you'll need to prepare the opening for installation. This may involve removing any existing trim or molding, as well as ensuring that the opening is level and square.

3. Installing the Window: With the opening prepared, you can now install your tilt and turn casement window. This will typically involve securing the window frame to the opening using screws or brackets, and then attaching the window sash to the frame using hinges.

4. Sealing and Insulating: To maximize the energy efficiency of your new windows, it's important to properly seal and insulate the window opening. This may involve applying weatherstripping or caulking around the window frame, as well as adding insulation between the window frame and the wall.

5. Finishing Touches: Finally, you'll need to reinstall any trim or molding that was removed during the installation process, and touch up any paint or finishes as needed.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles.
