In this comprehensive guide, we will discuss the key differences between these two popular window styles, the benefits of making the change, and the steps involved in the process. With over 1000 words, this article aims to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Casement Windows vs. Double Hung Windows: What's the Difference?

Before diving into the process of changing your windows, it's important to understand the key differences between casement and double hung windows.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged on one side and swing outward, either to the left or right, like a door. They are typically operated using a crank handle, which allows for easy opening and closing. Casement windows offer excellent ventilation, as they can be opened fully to let in fresh air. However, they may not be suitable for all home styles and can pose safety concerns for children if not properly secured.

Double Hung Windows

Double hung windows consist of two sashes (the movable parts of the window) that slide vertically within the frame. This allows for the top, bottom, or both sashes to be opened simultaneously, providing customizable ventilation options. Double hung windows are a classic choice for many homes, as they offer a timeless look and can be easily fitted with screens to keep insects out.

Benefits of Switching from Casement to Double Hung Windows

There are several reasons why homeowners may choose to switch from casement windows to double hung windows, including:

1. Aesthetics: Double hung windows offer a more traditional look, which can enhance the overall appearance of your home. This can be particularly beneficial if you are looking to maintain a consistent style throughout your property.

2. Ease of Use: While casement windows rely on a crank mechanism to open and close, double hung windows can be easily operated by sliding the sashes up and down. This can be more convenient for some users, particularly those with mobility issues.

3. Energy Efficiency: Double hung windows often come with energy-efficient features, such as double glazing and low-emissivity coatings, which can help to reduce heat transfer and lower your energy bills.

4. Safety: Double hung windows can be fitted with child safety locks, making them a safer option for families with young children. Additionally, they can be opened from the top, allowing for ventilation without the risk of a child climbing out of the window.

5. Versatility: With the ability to open both the top and bottom sashes, double hung windows offer more customizable ventilation options compared to casement windows.

Steps to Change Casement Windows to Double Hung Windows

Switching from casement to double hung windows involves several steps, including:

1. Assessing Your Current Windows: Before making any changes, it's important to assess the condition of your current casement windows. If they are in good condition and still provide adequate insulation, it may not be worth the cost and effort to replace them.

2. Choosing the Right Double Hung Windows: When selecting new double hung windows, consider factors such as energy efficiency, materials, and style. It's essential to choose windows that complement your home's existing architecture and meet your specific needs.

3. Hiring a Professional: Changing windows is a complex task that requires specialized skills and tools. It's highly recommended to hire a professional window installer to ensure the job is done correctly and safely.

4. Removing the Old Windows: The first step in the installation process is to remove the existing casement windows. This involves carefully detaching the windows from the frame and removing any hardware, such as the crank mechanism.

5. Preparing the Opening: Once the old windows have been removed, the opening must be prepared for the new double hung windows. This may involve adjusting the size of the opening, repairing any damage to the surrounding walls, and installing new framing materials.

6. Installing the New Windows: The double hung windows are then carefully placed into the opening and secured with screws or nails. It's essential to ensure the windows are level and properly sealed to prevent drafts and water infiltration.

7. Finishing Touches: Finally, any trim or molding is installed around the new windows to create a polished, finished look.

As you can see, changing casement windows to double hung windows is a significant undertaking that requires careful planning and professional assistance. However, the benefits of making the switch, such as improved aesthetics, energy efficiency, and safety, can make it a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can successfully transform your home's windows and enjoy the many advantages of double hung windows for years to come.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
