How to Transform Your Home: Replacing Casement Windows with Double-Hung Windows

Windows play a crucial role in the overall appearance, energy efficiency, and functionality of your home. If you're considering upgrading your casement windows to double-hung windows, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the entire process. Follow these steps to give your home a fresh, modern look while improving its energy efficiency and ventilation.

Why Choose Double-Hung Windows?

Before diving into the process, let's first understand the benefits of double-hung windows. These windows have two sashes that slide vertically, allowing for better ventilation and easier cleaning. They also provide a more traditional appearance, making them a popular choice for homeowners looking to enhance their home's aesthetic appeal. Additionally, double-hung windows often come with energy-efficient features, such as double-pane glass and low-emissivity coatings, which can help reduce your energy bills.

Step 1: Measure Your Existing Casement Windows

To ensure a seamless replacement process, you'll need to accurately measure your existing casement windows. Measure the width and height of each window, as well as the depth of the window frame. Be sure to take multiple measurements at different points along the frame, as windows can sometimes be slightly irregular in shape.

Step 2: Select Your New Double-Hung Windows

With your measurements in hand, you can now choose the perfect double-hung windows for your home. Consider factors such as frame material, glass type, and energy-efficiency ratings when making your selection. You'll also want to choose a style and color that complements your home's existing design.

Step 3: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin the installation process, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. Some common items you'll need include:

A pry bar

A utility knife

A hammer

A tape measure

A level

A drill

Wood shims

Caulk and a caulking gun

Window flashing tape

Step 4: Remove the Old Casement Windows

Start by carefully removing the casement windows from their frames. Use a utility knife to cut through any caulking or paint that may be sealing the window in place. Then, use a pry bar to gently lift the window sash out of the frame. Be sure to wear gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself from any broken glass or sharp edges.

Step 5: Prepare the Window Opening

Once the old windows have been removed, inspect the window opening for any damage or rot. If necessary, repair or replace any damaged framing members before proceeding. Next, clean the window opening, removing any debris, old caulking, or paint chips. Apply a layer of window flashing tape to the sill, ensuring that it extends up the sides of the opening by at least six inches.

Step 6: Install the New Double-Hung Windows

Carefully lift the new double-hung window into the opening, making sure it's centered and level. Use wood shims to adjust the position of the window as needed. Once the window is properly positioned, secure it in place by driving screws through the window frame and into the surrounding framing members. Be sure not to overtighten the screws, as this can cause the frame to warp.

Step 7: Insulate and Seal the Window

After the window is securely installed, fill any gaps between the window frame and the opening with insulation. This will help prevent drafts and improve the overall energy efficiency of your home. Next, apply a bead of caulk around the perimeter of the window, both on the interior and exterior sides, to create a watertight seal.

Step 8: Install Window Trim and Hardware

Finally, install any necessary window trim and hardware, such as sash locks and lift handles. This will give your new double-hung windows a polished, finished look.

And there you have it! By following these steps, you can successfully replace your casement windows with beautiful, energy-efficient double-hung windows. Not only will this upgrade enhance your home's aesthetic appeal, but it will also improve its overall functionality and energy efficiency. Happy renovating!

Casement Window

Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
