Double Hung vs Casement Windows: A Comprehensive Comparison for Homeowners

When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, the decision can be quite daunting. With a variety of styles, materials, and features available, finding the perfect fit for your needs can be challenging. Two of the most popular window styles are double hung and casement windows. In this comprehensive comparison, we'll explore the differences between these two window types, their advantages and disadvantages, and factors to consider when making your choice.

What are Double Hung Windows?

Double hung windows are a classic window style that features two sashes (the movable part of the window) that slide vertically within the frame. This design allows for both the top and bottom sashes to be opened and closed, providing excellent ventilation options. Double hung windows are a popular choice for many homeowners due to their versatility and traditional appearance.

Advantages of Double Hung Windows

1. Ventilation: With the ability to open both the top and bottom sashes, double hung windows provide excellent airflow and ventilation. This feature is particularly useful in rooms where consistent air circulation is desired, such as bedrooms and living areas.

2. Easy Cleaning: Double hung windows often have a tilt-in feature, allowing the sashes to be tilted inward for easy cleaning. This is a significant advantage for windows that are located on higher floors or in hard-to-reach areas.

3. Traditional Appearance: Double hung windows have a classic design that complements a wide range of architectural styles. This makes them a popular choice for homeowners looking to maintain a traditional aesthetic.

Disadvantages of Double Hung Windows

1. Energy Efficiency: Due to the design of double hung windows, they are generally less energy efficient than casement windows. The sashes can allow for more air infiltration, leading to increased heating and cooling costs.

2. Limited Opening: While double hung windows do provide good ventilation, their opening is limited by the size of the sashes. This can make it more challenging to move large items in and out of the home through the window.

What are Casement Windows?

Casement windows are hinged on one side and open outward using a crank or lever. They are often found in contemporary homes and provide a clean, modern appearance. Casement windows are known for their excellent energy efficiency and unobstructed views.

Advantages of Casement Windows

1. Energy Efficiency: Casement windows are among the most energy-efficient window styles available. When closed, the sash presses tightly against the frame, creating an airtight seal. This reduces air infiltration and helps to maintain a consistent temperature within the home.

2. Unobstructed Views: With no horizontal sash dividing the window, casement windows provide clear, unobstructed views. This makes them an excellent choice for homeowners looking to maximize natural light and enjoy picturesque scenery.

3. Security: Casement windows typically feature a multi-point locking system, making them more secure than double hung windows. This added security can be particularly beneficial for ground-level windows or those located in areas with a higher risk of break-ins.

Disadvantages of Casement Windows

1. Limited Ventilation: Unlike double hung windows, casement windows only open on one side, which can limit the amount of airflow they provide. However, the open sash can act as a sail, catching breezes and directing them into the home.

2. Maintenance: Casement windows have more moving parts than double hung windows, including the crank or lever mechanism. This can require more frequent maintenance to ensure smooth operation.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Double Hung and Casement Windows

1. Architectural Style: Consider the overall style of your home when choosing between double hung and casement windows. Double hung windows are more suitable for traditional homes, while casement windows are often found in modern and contemporary designs.

2. Ventilation Needs: If ventilation is a top priority, double hung windows may be the better choice due to their ability to open both the top and bottom sashes.

3. Energy Efficiency: For homeowners focused on energy efficiency, casement windows are the superior option, thanks to their airtight seal when closed.

4. Maintenance and Cleaning: If ease of cleaning is a concern, double hung windows with their tilt-in feature may be more appealing. However, keep in mind that casement windows may require more frequent maintenance due to their moving parts.

5. Security: If security is a concern, casement windows with their multi-point locking systems are the better choice.

In summary, both double hung and casement windows offer unique benefits and drawbacks. Understanding the differences between these two popular window styles can help you make an informed decision when selecting the perfect windows for your home. Consider factors such as architectural style, ventilation needs, energy efficiency, maintenance, and security when weighing your options. By taking the time to evaluate your specific needs and preferences, you can ensure that your new windows will not only enhance the appearance of your home but also provide the functionality and performance you desire.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors.
