Double Hung vs. Casement Windows: A Comprehensive Comparison

When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, the options can seem overwhelming. Two popular window styles are double hung and casement windows. In this blog post, we will delve into the differences between these two types of windows, their advantages and disadvantages, and factors to consider when making your choice. By the end of this post, you'll have a better understanding of which window style may be the best fit for your home.

Double Hung Windows: An Overview

Double hung windows are a classic choice for many homeowners. They are characterized by two sashes (the movable parts of a window) that slide vertically within the frame. This allows for both the top and bottom halves of the window to be opened, providing excellent ventilation. Double hung windows are a popular choice for a variety of architectural styles and can be found in both traditional and modern homes.

Advantages of Double Hung Windows

1. Versatility: Double hung windows work well in a variety of settings, from traditional to contemporary homes. They can be customized in terms of size, shape, and material to suit your specific needs and preferences.

2. Ventilation: The ability to open both the top and bottom sashes allows for excellent airflow and ventilation, making these windows perfect for rooms that require good air circulation, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

3. Ease of Cleaning: Double hung windows are designed for easy cleaning, as both sashes can be tilted inwards, allowing you to clean the exterior glass from the inside of your home.

Disadvantages of Double Hung Windows

1. Energy Efficiency: Due to their design, double hung windows may not be as energy efficient as other window styles, such as casement windows. The gaps between the sashes and the frame can allow for drafts and air leakage, which can result in higher energy bills.

2. Potential for Wear: The moving parts in double hung windows can wear out over time, leading to potential issues with functionality and the need for repairs or replacements.

Casement Windows: An Overview

Casement windows are hinged at the side and open outward, like a door. They are operated using a crank or lever, which makes them easy to open and close. Casement windows are a popular choice for modern homes and can be found in a variety of styles and materials.

Advantages of Casement Windows

1. Energy Efficiency: Casement windows are known for their excellent energy efficiency. When closed, the sash presses tightly against the frame, creating an airtight seal that prevents drafts and air leakage.

2. Unobstructed Views: Since casement windows do not have a center rail like double hung windows, they provide unobstructed views, allowing for more natural light and a better connection to the outdoors.

3. Ease of Operation: The crank or lever mechanism used to open and close casement windows makes them easy to operate, even for those with limited mobility or strength.

Disadvantages of Casement Windows

1. Limited Ventilation: While casement windows can provide excellent airflow when fully open, they do not offer the same level of ventilation control as double hung windows, which can be opened at both the top and bottom.

2. Potential for Damage: Since casement windows open outward, they can be susceptible to damage from strong winds or impact, especially if left open during a storm.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Double Hung and Casement Windows

1. Aesthetics: Consider the architectural style of your home and which window style would best complement its design. Double hung windows are often associated with traditional or historic homes, while casement windows can lend a more modern, streamlined appearance.

2. Functionality: Think about the specific needs and requirements of each room in your home. If ventilation is a priority, double hung windows may be the better choice. If energy efficiency is more important, casement windows could be the way to go.

3. Budget: While both double hung and casement windows can be found at various price points, casement windows tend to be slightly more expensive due to their more complex mechanism and higher energy efficiency.

4. Maintenance: Consider the long-term maintenance requirements of each window style. Double hung windows may require more frequent repairs or replacements due to wear on the moving parts, while casement windows may be more durable but still require regular maintenance to ensure smooth operation.

In summary, both double hung and casement windows have their unique advantages and disadvantages. By carefully considering factors such as aesthetics, functionality, budget, and maintenance, you can make an informed decision about which window style is the best fit for your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
