Accurate measurements are crucial for a successful casement window installation. Measure the width and height of the window opening, ensuring that you have enough space for the window unit to fit properly. It's a good idea to measure both the top and bottom widths, as well as the left and right heights, to account for any irregularities in the opening.
Once you have your measurements, check the opening for squareness by measuring the diagonals. If the measurements are the same or within 1/8 inch of each other, the opening is square. If not, you may need to make adjustments to the opening before proceeding.
Next, clean the opening and surrounding area, removing any debris or old caulking. Apply window flashing tape to the sill, ensuring that it extends up the sides of the opening by at least 6 inches.
Before securing the window in place, it's essential to perform a dry fit to ensure proper alignment and fit. Carefully place the casement window in the opening, centering it and ensuring that it is level and plumb. Use shims as needed to adjust the window's position.
Once you're satisfied with the window's placement, mark the location of the mounting holes on the window frame and the surrounding wall.
Remove the window from the opening and drill pilot holes for the mounting screws at the marked locations. Apply a generous bead of window sealant to the backside of the window's mounting flange, ensuring that it covers the entire perimeter.
Carefully place the window back into the opening, aligning the mounting holes with the pilot holes. Secure the window in place using screws, tightening them until the window is snug against the sealant but not overly tight.
Check the window's operation by opening and closing it, making any necessary adjustments to ensure smooth operation.
With the window securely in place, it's time to insulate and seal the gaps between the window and the opening. Use expanding foam insulation to fill any gaps, taking care not to overfill the space, as this can cause the window frame to bow.
Trim away any excess insulation once it has cured, and apply window sealant around the entire perimeter of the window, smoothing it with a wet finger or a caulking tool for a clean finish.
Measure and cut the interior trim pieces to fit around the window, mitering the corners for a professional appearance. Attach the trim using nails or screws, taking care not to damage the window frame.
On the exterior of the window, apply window flashing tape to the sides and top of the window, overlapping the tape on the sill to create a watertight seal. Install any exterior trim or siding as necessary to complete the installation.
