Casement Windows vs. Single Hung: A Comprehensive Cost Comparison for Homeowners

When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, there are several factors to consider, including style, functionality, and cost. Two popular options in the market are casement windows and single hung windows. In this blog post, we will dive deep into the world of these two window styles, comparing their costs and benefits, to help you make an informed decision for your home improvement project.

What are Casement Windows and Single Hung Windows?

Before we delve into the cost comparison, let's briefly define these two window styles.

Casement Windows: Casement windows are hinged at the side and open outward with the help of a crank or lever. They offer excellent ventilation, unobstructed views, and are easy to clean from the inside.

Single Hung Windows: Single hung windows have a fixed upper sash and a movable lower sash that slides vertically. They are a classic window style, often found in older homes, and are known for their simplicity and affordability.

Initial Costs: Window Prices and Installation

When comparing the costs of casement and single hung windows, it's essential to consider both the price of the windows themselves and the cost of installation.

Window Prices

Casement windows are generally more expensive than single hung windows. The price difference is primarily due to the more complex hardware and mechanisms involved in casement windows. On average, casement windows can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 or more per window, depending on the size, materials, and manufacturer.

Single hung windows, on the other hand, are more budget-friendly, with prices ranging from $100 to $500 per window. The simplicity of their design and operation contributes to their lower cost.

Installation Costs

The installation cost for both casement and single hung windows can vary depending on the complexity of the project, the type of materials used, and the labor rates in your area. However, casement windows typically require more labor-intensive installation due to their unique opening mechanism, resulting in higher installation costs. On average, casement window installation can range from $150 to $400 per window, while single hung window installation may cost between $100 and $300 per window.

Long-Term Costs: Energy Efficiency and Maintenance

In addition to the initial costs, it's crucial to consider the long-term costs associated with each window style, including energy efficiency and maintenance.

Energy Efficiency

Casement windows are known for their excellent energy efficiency, as they form a tight seal when closed. This helps to minimize air leakage and drafts, keeping your home comfortable and reducing your energy bills. Single hung windows, while still energy-efficient, may not provide the same level of insulation as casement windows due to their sliding sash design.

Maintenance Costs

Both casement and single hung windows require regular maintenance to ensure smooth operation and a long lifespan. However, casement windows may need more frequent maintenance due to their more complex hardware and mechanisms. This can include lubricating the hinges and crank, as well as checking the weatherstripping for wear and tear. Single hung windows, with their simpler design, may require less frequent maintenance, such as cleaning the tracks and ensuring the sash operates smoothly.

Aesthetic and Functional Considerations

While cost is an important factor when choosing between casement and single hung windows, it's also essential to consider the aesthetic and functional aspects of each style. Casement windows offer unobstructed views and excellent ventilation, making them a popular choice for rooms with a view or areas that require ample airflow. Their modern, sleek appearance can also enhance the overall aesthetic of your home.

Single hung windows, on the other hand, offer a classic, traditional look that can complement a variety of architectural styles. They may be a better choice for homes with limited exterior space, as they do not open outward like casement windows. Additionally, single hung windows can be more secure, as they have fewer points of entry for potential intruders.

In conclusion, both casement and single hung windows have their unique advantages and drawbacks when it comes to cost, energy efficiency, maintenance, and aesthetics. By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs, preferences, and budget.

Casement Window

LOW PRICE BEST DESIGN GOOD QUALITY FAST DELIVERY

Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

The continuous technological innovation of the European hardware industry has strongly promoted the performance improvement and functional innovation of windows and doors. In this project, Doorwin uses Hoppe™ multi-point locks, hinges, and handles from Germany.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
