A Comprehensive Guide to Casement Window Air Conditioner Installation

Introduction

Casement windows are a popular choice for homeowners due to their aesthetic appeal and ability to provide excellent ventilation. However, when it comes to installing an air conditioner in a casement window, the process can be a bit more challenging than with traditional double-hung windows. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to successfully install a casement window air conditioner, ensuring you stay cool and comfortable all summer long.

Choosing the Right Air Conditioner

Before diving into the installation process, it's essential to choose the right air conditioner for your casement window. Casement window air conditioners are specially designed to fit the unique dimensions of these windows. They are typically narrower and taller than standard window air conditioners, ensuring a secure fit.

When selecting an air conditioner, consider the following factors:

1. Size: Measure the dimensions of your casement window to ensure the air conditioner will fit properly. Most casement window air conditioners are designed to fit windows with a width of 15-16 inches and a height of 20-21 inches. Be sure to check the product specifications to ensure compatibility.

2. Cooling Capacity: Choose an air conditioner with the appropriate cooling capacity (measured in BTUs) for the size of your room. As a general rule, you'll need approximately 20 BTUs per square foot of living space. For example, a 150-square-foot room would require a 3,000-BTU air conditioner.

3. Energy Efficiency: Look for an air conditioner with a high Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) to save on energy costs. The higher the EER, the more energy-efficient the unit.

Gathering the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting the installation process, gather the following tools and materials:

Casement window air conditioner

Support brackets or mounting kit (if not included with the air conditioner)

Screwdriver

Measuring tape

Level

Carpenter's square

Pencil

Drill with appropriate bits

Weatherstripping or foam insulation

Preparing the Window

1. Clear the area: Ensure the area around the window is clear, providing ample space to work. Remove any furniture, curtains, or blinds that may obstruct the installation process.

2. Clean the window: Thoroughly clean the window, paying particular attention to the tracks and the area where the air conditioner will be installed.

3. Remove the window screen: Carefully remove the window screen, if present, and set it aside.

Installing the Support Brackets

1. Attach the brackets to the air conditioner: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to attach the support brackets to the air conditioner unit. Ensure the brackets are securely fastened and properly aligned.

2. Position the brackets in the window: Place the air conditioner unit with the attached brackets in the window, ensuring the brackets rest securely on the window sill. Use a level to check that the unit is even.

3. Secure the brackets to the window: Following the manufacturer's instructions, use the provided screws or fasteners to secure the support brackets to the window sill and window frame.

Installing the Air Conditioner

1. Lift the air conditioner into place: Carefully lift the air conditioner and slide it into the window, ensuring the bottom of the unit rests on the support brackets. Ensure the air conditioner is centered in the window opening.

2. Secure the air conditioner to the brackets: Using the provided screws or fasteners, secure the air conditioner to the support brackets according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Close the window: Carefully close the casement window, ensuring the top of the air conditioner is tightly sealed against the window frame. If necessary, use a carpenter's square to ensure the window is properly aligned.

4. Seal the gaps: Apply weatherstripping or foam insulation around the air conditioner to seal any gaps and prevent drafts. Pay particular attention to the area where the window meets the air conditioner and the sides of the unit.

5. Plug in the air conditioner: Plug the air conditioner into a grounded electrical outlet, ensuring the cord is not stretched or pinched.

Final Thoughts

With your casement window air conditioner securely installed, you can now enjoy a cool and comfortable living space. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the air filter and checking for proper drainage, will ensure your air conditioner operates efficiently and effectively throughout the summer months. By following this comprehensive guide, you can confidently tackle the installation process and stay cool all season long.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
